Search underway for Kennedy Townsend's daughter, grandson

Larry Hogan confirmed the two have not been found at the start of a press conference on Friday afternoon. Kennedy Townsend is the daughter of former Maryland Lieutenant Governor and gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Meave Kennedy Townsend McKean and her young son Gideon had vanished into the Chesapeake Bay while canoeing on Thursday afternoon off the coast of Shady Side, Maryland. Later, an overturned canoe matching the same one that went missing was retrieved, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources police. She's the oldest daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and niece of former President John F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy.

"At this time, our family asks for privacy and that everyone keep Maeve and Gideon in their prayers", they said.

The granddaughter of Robert F Kennedy and her eight-year-old son have been missing in the Chesapeake Bay since Thursday, in the latest tragedy to befall the American political dynasty.

McKean and Gideon were trying to retrieve a ball that landed in the water at her mom's waterfront home in Shady Side, Maryland, when they drifted away from shore, her husband David McKean told The Washington Post.

However, although the County Fire Department arrived with in five minutes of the call, it was said the conditions of the water were too risky.

The caller reported that boaters were "seen struggling to return to shore in a canoe" near Herring Bay amid high winds before vanishing out of sight, the Coast Guard said.

Firefighters and water rescue were dispatched to the scene.

John F. Kennedy Jr., only three-years-old when his father was killed, later died in a plane crash in 1999.

John F. Kennedy was assasinated in November 1963, during his time as President of the United States, with his brother Robert assassinated in 1968.

The Kennedy family has a long history of tragic incidents.

Robert F. Kennedy's son, David, died of a drug overdose in 1984, and another son, Michael, died in a skiing accident in the late 1990s.
