Shooter in custody: Canadian police say 'multiple victims'

Following a manhunt, Canadian police have arrested a suspect in a Nova Scotia shooting after multiple victims were found.

An investigation has begun following an active-shooter situation involving a 51-year-old man from Portapique, N.S.

Portapique residents said the incident started late on Saturday night when police urged everyone to stay indoors.

Wortman, police warned, may have been using a vehicle that resembled an RCMP cruiser while wearing an RCMP uniform.

Authorities then said that he switched vehicles and was seen driving a silver Chevrolet Tracker in the Milford area. It's not clear if he switched vehicles or was driving this vehicle all along.

"Gabriel Wortman, suspect in active shooter investigation, is now in custody", the force said in a tweet.

"You just don't even dream that this is going to happen", he said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described it as "a awful situation" and Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil told reporters "this is one of the most senseless acts of violence in our province's history".

Around 10 a.m. - CBC confirms a person with the name Gabriel Wortman is listed as a denturist in the Halifax area on the Denturist Society of Nova Scotia website.

The attacker was captured by police on Sunday in the rural town of Portapique.

Taggart doesn't know Wortman personally, he said, but has spoken to him occasionally on the phone. They said Wortman was considered armed and risky and warned that he should not be approached.

"To the families of the victims and to those still feeling afraid, my heart goes out to you", said Stephen McNeil at a Sunday COVID-19 related news conference. A suspect photo issued by the RCMP reportedly matches video footage of a man being interviewed about dentures by CTV Atlantic in 2014.

Taggart described knowing Wortman's "lovely big home" on Portapique Beach Road.

Nova Scotia RCMP say they were responding to a firearms complaint in Portapique, which is in Colchester County about 40 kilometres west of Truro. 'I can't fathom it'.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also spoke about the rampage on Sunday, stating, "My heart goes out to everyone affected in what is a bad situation".

During a media briefing on Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada briefly touched on the tragedy and thanked the police for their work.
