South Korea: No Unusual Activity From North Amid Kim Health Claims

South Korea's presidential office on Tuesday downplayed reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's health is in a serious condition.

A defense ministry spokesperson declined to comment. And state media have since reported he sent greetings to Syrian President Bashar Assad and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel as well as "birthday spreads" to two North Korean officials and a new centenarian. Seoul's intelligence agency later said that he underwent surgery to have a cyst removed from his ankle.

After assessing that Kim's condition had improved, most of the medical team treating him returned to Pyongyang on April 19 and only part of them remained to oversee his recovery situation, according to the news site. The Kospi closed 1 per cent lower.

But specifics on Kim's condition remain unclear, as North Korea has been notorious for withholding and distorting news inside its borders.

Rumours about Kim Jong Un's health started after the North Korean leader failed to show up at celebrations to mark his grandfather's birthday on April 15.

In 2014 Kim Jong-Un was absent for 40 days, and it is highly unlikely North Korea would have been informed of any ill health of their leader via state media.

Kim is the latest in his family's dynasty to rule North Korea's repressive regime, which is responsible for some of the world's worst human-rights atrocities, according to defectors and worldwide watchdogs.

The Daily NK, a Seoul-based website that gathers information from informants inside the isolated nation, separately reported that Kim underwent a "cardiovascular surgical procedure" and was now mostly recovered. I would like to refrain from commenting on the reports. "We will keep gathering and analyzing information regarding North Korea by collaborating with other countries such as the U.S". Rumours of Kim Jong-un being gravely-ill and recovering from a risky operation had been making rounds on the internet since Monday. "Now, there is no clear transition plan and no clear future leader".

He last appeared in state media on April 12 when he inspected a "pursuit assault plane group".

North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un is reportedly "in grave danger" after undergoing surgery and has not been seen publicly since April 11. The next day it said he inspected a military unit, but didn't reveal the date of that visit.

Chinese police later arrested several North Koreans dispatched to Beijing on suspicion of plotting to kill Mr Kim Han Sol, South Korea's JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported at the time. His absences from official state media often spark speculation and rumors about his health.

As seen in Singapore, the coronavirus can surge again, and North Korea's powerful Politburo said last week it would further bolster anti-epidemic steps.

South Korean officials downplayed the implications of these reports, noting no unusual activity in North Korea.
