Surgeon general warns US of 'saddest week' and '9/11 moment'

The number of people infected in the USA has exceeded 300,000, with the death toll climbing past 8,400.

Adams added "I want America to understand that ... the public along with the state and federal government have the power to change the trajectory of this epidemic".

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams speaks during a briefing on coronavirus in the Brady press briefing room at the White House, Saturday, March 14, 2020, in Washington, as Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin listens.

The coronavirus death toll in hardest-hit NY state rose to 4,159, Governor Andrew Cuomo said, up from 3,565 a day prior.

Just eight United States governors have decided against issuing statewide directives urging their residents to stay at home as the outbreak escalates. "The governors are intensely protective of their right to decide what's right for their states and rightly so", he said.

In doing so, they've collectively ignored the stay-at-home pleas of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, who said in a CNN interview: "If you look at what's going on in this country, I just don't understand why we're not doing that".

"Give us a week".

"I just want everyone to know that, from a national perspective, the surgeon general was saying, no matter where you are, stay at home".

US reports highest single-day coronavirus death toll since outbreak

Absent a nationwide order, which Trump once again on Saturday declined to give, a patchwork of rules has emerged in all corners of the country that offer conflicting guidance for how citizens should protect themselves and their families from coronavirus.

"The apex could be a plateau and we could be on that plateau now", he said.

The US death toll was creeping toward the grim milestone of 10,000 as the pandemic's epicenter in NY racked up hundreds of lives lost a day and hospitals girded for an influx of new infected patients.

"It's going to be a very deadly period, unfortunately", US President Donald Trump said at a White House news conference.

"We need to be prepared that, since it unlikely will be completely eradicated from the planet, that as we get into next season, we may see the beginning of a resurgence", Fauci said. Nine governors have resisted such a move, prompting many to call for Trump to issue an order for people to stay home across the USA. "That's the reason why we're pushing so hard in getting our preparedness much better than it was".

He said those nine states where a stay-at-home order hasn't been issued "actually produce a large amount of our food" and are balancing the need to "provide for the rest of the country" with the need to avoid spreading the virus.

After noting that he ran a state department of health and that he's talked to many governors, Adams gave a grim comparison regarding the anticipated rise of coronavirus cases next week.
