India reported 100 more deaths, besides fresh 3,967 positive cases were reported since Thursday in the country, said the official data issued by India's federal health ministry.

Over the past seven days, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Delhi have seen the highest spike in cases among the top ten states with most cases. The number of deaths across the country stood at 2,649, it showed.

Tamil Nadu has a tally of 9,674 cases inclusive of 2,240 patients cured/discharged and 66 fatalities.

NEW DELHI, May 16 ― India's total novel corornavirus cases rose to 85,940 today, taking it past China, where the pandemic originated previous year, though a strict lockdown enforced since late March has reduced the rate of contagion. China has recorded 4,633 deaths so far while India's death tally remains at 2,649, say media reports. "We have utilised this period of lockdown to accelerate public health measures such as case detection, contact tracing, isolation and management of cases", Vardhan said.
