Cyclone Amphan likely to intensify into `very severe cyclonic storm`: IMD

Since last night, it has intensified slightly and is lying centred about 990 km south of Odisha's Paradip, 1140 km of south-southwest of West Bengal's Digha and 1260 km south-southwest of Bangladesh's Khepupara.

"Amphan" is expected to intensify at least twice to become an extremely severe cyclone ahead of landfall by Wednesday along the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast. NDRF has deployed the teams well in advance.

"It is very likely to move north-northwestwards initially till May 17 and then recurve north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal towards West Bengal and adjoining Odisha coasts during May 18 and 20", the weather department said. Collectors have been directed to shift temporary medical quarantine centres situated within 3 kilometres from the seashore in the coastal districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur for safe accommodation of migrant workers. "If required, evacuation of people will be undertaken in view of the situation", he was quoted as saying by PTI.

Sufficient dry food and dairy feed have been arranged so that there would not be any scarcity of food for man and cattle as well while the people take shelter at the cyclone centers, said the minister.

"Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), NDRF and fire service personnel have already been sent to the districts".

The NDRF, Armed Forces and the Indian Coast Guard have been put on alert and are coordinating with the state government authorities.

Coastal Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places from May 18 evening.

According to the latest updates, the West Bengal state government has requisitioned two NDRF teams to be deployed at two locations in the state in the wake of the Cyclone Amphan. These teams are in six districts - South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Howrah and Hooghly. It has also deployed seven teams at 3rd NDRF BN Mundali in Cuttack.

Odisha was also hit by cyclone "Bulbul" in October, 2019. Very heavy showers above 150mm are likely at some places.

Due to rough waves in the sea off the coast, fishermen have been warned not to engage in fishing activities as a result of the Amphan Storm in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and beyond the Western coast of Bengal.

West Bengal Home secretary Alapan Bandopdhyay said that the entire state machinery is prepared to deal with the situation.

The railways said the AC special trains between New Delhi and Bhubaneswar will be diverted for four days from Monday.

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on Saturday reviewed the preparedness for the impending cyclone and directed immediate assistance to West Bengal and Odisha. Only the headline has been changed.
