Federal Judge Dismisses U.S. Women’s Soccer Team’s Unequal Pay Lawsuit

U.S. women soccer players' claim that they are paid less than male counterpoints to play for the national team was thrown out by a federal judge who found that any pay discrepancy was due to differences they negotiated in their collective bargaining agreements.

Gary Klausner of the Central District of California has ruled against the gender pay gap lawsuit filed by the US Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT).

Klausner wrote U.S. Soccer had substantiated its argument that the women's team had actually earned more "on both a cumulative and an average per-game basis" than the men's team during the years at issue in the lawsuit.

The players' case for unfair treatment in travel, housing and medical support is still set for trial on 16th of June.

"We are shocked and disappointed with today's decision, but we will not give up our hard work for equal pay", Molly Levinson said in an emailed statement.

"If you know this team at all you know we have a lot of fight left in us", defender Becky Sauerbrunn wrote on Twitter.

Former Vice President Joe Biden pledged to cut funding to the US Soccer Federation if women don't get equal pay to their male counterparts. "We're assured in our case and steadfast in our dedication to making sure that women and girls who play this sport won't be valued as lesser simply due to their gender".

Last month U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro resigned over language used in a court filing suggesting women possess less ability than men when it comes to soccer.

The bulk of the games in question came during the Victory Tour after the 2015 Women's World Cup, which under Federation Internationale de Football Association management was played entirely on artificial turf in Canada.

The women's national team beat the Netherlands 2-0 to claim their fourth World Cup title in July 2019, as the stadium rang with chants of, "Equal Pay, Equal Pay", catapulting its players into the spotlight.

"We have learned that there are tremendous obstacles to change", she said.

The women's team also played three games on artificial turf in the summer and fall of 2017. "We will appeal and press on", Levinson added. "Words can not express our gratitude to all who support us".

"We look forward to working with the Women's National Team to chart a positive path forward to grow the game both here at home and around the world".

Caitlin Murray is a contributor to Yahoo Sports and her book about the US women's national team, The National Team: The Inside Story of the Women Who Changed Soccer, is out now. Their legal professionals stated though the federation backed off earlier arguments saying ladies had been inferior to their male counterparts in ability and energy, it nonetheless deliberate to contest variations in duty.
