North Korea's Kim reappears after weeks of speculation

South Korea says its troops have exchanged fire with North Korea along their tense land border.

The military said in a statement South Korea fired two rounds in response after issuing a warning broadcast.

Two North Korean defectors elected as lawmakers in South Korea last month have apologized for publicly raising suspicions over the health of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Daily NK, a South Korean website which bases its stories on accounts by defectors from the North, cited an unidentified source inside DPRK on 20 April as claiming that Kim was recovering from a heart surgery allegedly conducted a week prior because of his "excessive smoking, obesity, and fatigue".

North Korea has shown no willingness to abandon weapons it sees as vital for defense of the nation and the Kim dynasty.

Background: The DMZ is in reality the most militarized border in the world, acting as a a 155-mile-long buffer zone between the two countries with mines, guard posts and almost two million troops on both sides.

Despite its name, the demilitarized zone is one of the most fortified places on earth, replete with minefields and barbed-wire fences. "The South Koreans did return fire", Pompeo said.

The uncertainty around the process would have increased had Kim been incapacitated or dead as rumoured in recent weeks.

After taking part at a politburo meeting of the ruling Workers' Party on pril 11, Kim was absent from the public eye, including on the birth anniversary of his grandfather and the founder of the North, Kim Il-Sung, on April 15.

South Korea has maintained they believe he is alive and well in the port town of Wonsan. The North Korean state media published videos and photos of the leader walking around a fertilizer factory on Friday.

A senior South Korean presidential official told reporters Sunday that the government had determined that Kim did not have surgery or any other procedure, according to the presidential Blue House. Trump wrote in a Saturday tweet.

"Regardless of what transpires inside of North Korea with respect to their leadership, our mission remains the same - to deliver on that commitment that Chairman Kim made with President Trump".

"We also sent a notice to the North Korean side via the inter-Korean communication line at around 9:35 a.m., and called for its explanation", a JCS officer said.
