Seattle's first confirmed case of rare childhood disease linked to Covid-19

Reaction and analysis from Dr. Roberta Debiasi, Division Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Children's National Hospital, on 'America's News HQ'.

"It's occurring about six weeks after a child may have been exposed to COVID-19 infection", he said.

MA hospitals are seeing a small number of cases of a rare pediatric inflammatory disease afflicting children that is possibly related to COVID-19.

At Montreal's Sainte-Justine Hospital, doctors have seen between 15 and 20 cases, and they suspect the patients may have been affected with COVID-19 earlier, according to Dr. Stephen Freedman, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at the University of Calgary, who is leading an global study tracking about 1,500 children who've been tested for COVID-19 in 14 countries.

So far, three children in NY have died from the condition, including a five-year-old boy, a seven-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman.

That's what Bobby Dean's family did, even though they live in Steuben County, which has only 239 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and is in a part of the state set to start reopening some workplaces on Friday. Nearly all have tested positive for coronavirus or the antibodies that reflect exposure to the virus. By that night, the boy's fever had spiked, his abdomen was swollen, he was severely dehydrated and his heart was racing.

"In those countries where there's been a huge volume of infection - the United States and the United Kingdom - ... there does seem to be an association between an increased incidence of this condition and potentially COVID-positive children", he said. He came home on Mother's Day.

"We are going to do everything, everything to protect our children", he said. "That seems to be one explanation", she says.

"This is a distressing and unexpected development in a pandemic that was already hard enough, frankly", says Dr. Mary Beth Son, program director of the Rheumatology Program at Children's.

The condition, Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome, or PIMS, is considered rare, but potentially fatal. They reported reported 197 new deaths and 1,028 new cases Wednesday.

Several children are still recovering in hospital and some have now been discharged, but similar cases have also been reported north of the river at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

"This is a new development in which we did not expect and it's very, very troubling to me", Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said in an interview with 7 Eyewitness News Tuesday night.

Two of the children in the group, including the boy who died, were obese.

The syndrome is "exceptionally rare", he said.

The alert from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be released on Wednesday or Thursday, a agency spokesman said in an emailed statement.

The disease is being linked to Covid-19, Portman said, because nearly all of the patients have had confirmed cases of the virus, positive antibody tests, or known exposure. But officials said Kawasaki disease was not the underlying condition the child had.

"So we really think that the biology of the disease, somehow involves an unusual immune response to the virus", he said.

Children diagnosed with Kawasaki disease are given a high dose of aspirin to prevent blood clots and turn down the rampant inflammation in the body. Certain children may be at higher risk for developing the illness than others, but we don't know exactly why, he added. "In my opinion, right now, I would not let your child out in public".
