Skeptics loom as NCAA builds guardrails around compensation

"While student-athletes would be permitted to identify themselves by sport and school, the use of conference and school logos, trademarks or other involvement would not be allowed", the NCAA stated.

In a statement, the powerful National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) said its board of governors had given its backing to landmark reforms that were drawn up in October previous year.

The next step is for membership to draft legislation by October 30. This includes a ban on using endorsement deals as inducements for incoming high school recruits. A vote on the proposals would take place in January, with a view to putting new rules into effect for the 2021-22 school year. These should not include any name, picture, and similarity practises that would be considered pay for play; no association with schools or conferences; no use of name, picture, and similarity for school or booster recruitment; and controlling agents and advisors.

"The opportunity to earn some compensation off their name, image and likeness might be made available to more than just that few", Tiner said.

The need for change now was sped up by pressure from state lawmakers.

The NCAA approved nationwide name and image likeness rights for athletes, meaning that NCAA athletes can now profit off their image.

"We really would like for this to be, and believe it needs to be, a transparent process", Tiner said.

According to Kansas basketball coach Bill Self, this kind of move has been needed for years.

The board also discussed additional considerations that would arise as a result of rules changes in these areas, including the development of a framework to address potential conflicts between student-athlete activities and a school's values or existing commercial relationships.

Many fans who don't care at all about NIL rights do care about getting their hands on a new NCAA Football game but opening the door for a licensed video game would have likely meant allowing players to collectively bargain for their representation in the game.

"When we signed up for that, it was going to be four months and it turned into a year, but I think making that presentation was important", said George. "It'll be interesting to see".

Michael V Drake, chair of the board and president of Ohio State said: "Throughout our efforts to enhance support for college athletes, the NCAA has relied upon considerable feedback from and the engagement of our members, including numerous student-athletes, from all three divisions".

The board on Monday and Tuesday reviewed detailed recommendations put forth by a working group led by Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith and Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman.

If the student athlete is allowed to be paid by these companies, advertisers and media networks, to the excess of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and in some cases definitely millions of dollars, these things that they receive for free should be taken from them.
