Space X Launch Scrubbed Due To Weather

Nasa astronauts Robert Behnken, 49, and Douglas Hurley, 53, former military test pilots who joined the USA space agency in 2000, are to blast off for the ISS from historic Launch Pad 39A on a two-stage SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

SpaceX was on the cusp of launching NASA astronauts into orbit Wednesday, a first for a private company and a giant leap forward for the booming business of space travel. NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley will launch aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, which will be propelled into space by a Falcon 9 rocket.

Nasa has had to pay Russian Federation for use of its Soyuz rockets to take USA astronauts to space ever since the space shuttle program ended and the decision was taken to shift focus to commercial partners for missions in low Earth orbit.

The SpaceX Falcon 9, with the Dragon capsule on top of the rocket, is raised onto Launch Pad 39A Tuesday at Cape Canaveral, Fla. Space X designed and built both spacecraft.

NASA team members also discuss the science of how the Falcon 9 rocket will help lift the astronauts aboard the Crew Dragon vessel into space.

It would also bolster NASA's bet that relying on commercial companies for "routine" services, such as transporting cargo and crew to the space station, will free up the agency to focus on more ambitious endeavors, such as missions to the moon or Mars. Nasa has awarded almost $8bn (£6.4bn) in total to SpaceX and Boeing for development of their rockets.

Bad weather has hampered efforts to get the rocket off the ground in a safe manner at Florida's Kennedy Space Center. This mission marks the first time since the retirement of the space shuttle in 2011 that humans will fly to the space station from US soil.Set a reminder to tune for joint NASA/SpaceX coverage starting at 12:15 p.m. EDT, with liftoff now targeted for 4:33 p.m. EDT.

The next launch window is set for Saturday afternoon, when SpaceX will make a second attempt to send the astronauts into orbit.

Pence was present to see off Behnken and Hurley as they left the operations building at KSC to ride to the launch site.

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday revealed it temporarily assigned about 20 of its employees to the Space Exploration Company, better known as SpaceX.

Once certified, SpaceX said in a release last month NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins, Shannon Walker and JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi have been assigned to fly on Dragon's first six-month operational mission targeted for later this year.

The launch puts Elon Musk's SpaceX in the same league as only three countries - Russia, the USA and China, which sent astronauts into orbit in that order.

The next launch attempt will be on Saturday.

"And if you think about it, we're accelerating a 4-1/2 million pound system from zero miles per hour to its orbital velocity of 17,500 miles per hour in those 8-1/2 minutes". Our next opportunity will be Saturday, May 30 at 3:22 pm ET.
