The drug showing promise against Covid-19

The top USA infectious disease expert revealed the early conclusion of an even bigger remdesivir study performed by the United States government.

Officials with the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, the research arm of Northwell Health, announced they were conducting two clinical trials of the drug late last month. "I would hope that actually winds up being the case". Shortly afterward, Dr. Anthony Fauci said remdesivir will become the "standard of care" for all infected patients.

Results of the test are based on the first 460 patients from the 1,063 studied.

The antiviral drug remdesivir is showing promise as a COVID-19 treatment in early USA clinical trials, though other research hasn't seen as much success.

She described the US randomized-control trial as the "gold standard" for medical studies. "This trial is going to continue", said Dr. Andre Kalil. "I suspect it did but that wasn't specifically stated". Since the White House was not planning a daily virus briefing, Fauci said he was invited to release the news at a media conference with Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards. The company says that full data is awaited, and it plans to publish the results in a peer-reviewed journal in the coming weeks. Results also suggested a survival benefit, with a mortality rate of 8.0% for the group receiving remdesivir versus 11.6% for the placebo group.

Gilead Sciences Inc GILD.O , maker of the experimental coronavirus drug remdesivir, on Thursday said it will work with worldwide partners to expand production of the potential COVID-19 treatment. When we designed the overall clinical program, we did so in such a way that we could ask multiple questions in parallel, including which groups of patients are most likely to respond, when to treat and for how long.

"Two earlier studies, one of which is published in The Lancet done in Wuhan, didn't show any impact of the drug and neither did the other one".

He added: "Future studies need to determine whether earlier treatment with remdesivir, higher doses, or combination with other antivirals or SARS-CoV-2 neutralising antibodies, might be more effective in those with severe illness". "What we don't know is who are the right people to give it to and at what point".

The NIH trial of the antiviral, which is made by Gilead Sciences, began on February 21. Given through an IV, the medication is created to interfere with an enzyme that reproduces viral genetic material. Without a control group, doctors can not determine that remdesivir actually caused patients to improve, as opposed to a strong placebo effect or some other, unknown factor.

"We are extremely happy that the work of this team contributed not only to the advancement of scientific knowledge, but also to the helping many of our patients recover more quickly and return home to their families", Mehta says.

But what does that mean for Canada?

Like Remdesivir, it's an antiviral drug that was originally developed to treat a different viral disease - on this occasion, malaria. "So that's where things get tricky", Evans said.

"It's a marathon, not a sprint, but I'm cautiously optimistic that we will be able to put together a cocktail that will work together to really knock the virus down".

Fauci said it was the first "truly high-powered" randomized placebo controlled trial of remdesivir, noting that it involved more than a thousand hospitalized patients at sites in numerous countries. He did stress, however, that remdesivir is not the end-all cure for COVID-19.

Gilead said it was ramping up production and aims to have more than 140,000 treatment courses by the end of May, more than 500,000 by October and more than 1 million by December. Further trials are under way and will more definitively show whether remdesivir is a suitable and effective treatment for COVID-19.

The trial also came close to showing the drug helped people survive the disease, but the data fell just short of statistical significance.
