United Kingdom in talks with Roche over 'game-changer' coronavirus test

Unlike tests to diagnose diseases, antibody tests show who has been infected and recovered.

Junior health minister Edward Argar said that the test had the potential to be a "game changer", noting that a Public Health England (PHE) laboratory in Porton Down had determined that the test was accurate enough to use.

Roche's serology test is created to help determine if an individual has been exposed to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and if they have developed antibodies against it.

Speaking at the daily Downing Street press briefing on May 4, Mr Hancock said: "Today, Roche, the Swiss global diagnostics company, made a very positive announcement about progress with their antibody test and we're in discussions with them about a very large-scale roll-out of antibody testing, as well as with some others who may be able to bring this forward". "Can they actually detect the specific COVID-19 antibodies or not?" said Tam.

Offering people immunity passports is clearly risky anyway, because they could be forged or people could deliberately adopt risky behaviour in the hope of getting infected and being released from lockdown. "These tests will help us better understand immunity against the virus and how it spreads, so we can keep Canadians safe and healthy".

Very. The test picks up 100% of people who have had coronavirus.

Last week, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the United Kingdom was in talks with Roche about a "very large-scale roll-out" of coronavirus antibody testing.

The test is ideal for those who had COVID-19 symptoms but didn't qualify for the nasal swab early in the outbreak, when testing was limited.

He told ITV's Peston: "Well, I think it tends to confirm that we've got a very sharp move into recession and it was quite sudden, which is obviously what we've all observed from the shutting down of the economy so, to be frank, we're not really surprised by that number at all". Downtown Urgent Care and Creve Coeur Urgent Care can see patients via a tele-visit to evaluate a patient and issue an antibody testing script if one is needed for insurance.

"This is a critical step for the work of the Immunity Task Force", he said.

At the other end of the country, B.C.'s provincial health officer has already invited residents there to volunteer for a serology blood testing study. The results range from two to three per cent up to 30 per cent in some hard-hit regions.

"The test goes on a large automated system ... from a theoretical point of view, it can do close to 200 tests per hour".
