Weather scrubs SpaceX commercial crew launch

Yesterday, space and tech enthusiasts awaited Elon Musk's latest venture: the maiden voyage of the SpaceX Dragon to the International Space Station. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were scheduled to visit Florida's Cape Canaveral to view the launch in person. The launch is now scheduled for 3:22 p.m. EDT Saturday, May 30.

In the event of a postponement, the next launch opportunity would be Saturday.

"Just saw a couple of bolts of lightning east towards the launch pad". For those, astronauts use NASA's Extravehicular Mobility Units, which are created to work for eight to 10 hours in a full vacuum like space and protect astronauts from unsafe radiation.

Although SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule can break away from the rocket and fly the astronauts to safety in case any issues arise after the lift-off, SpaceX monitors weather conditions to prepare for any possible abort scenario.

Large crowds had gathered along Florida's Space Coast to watch the launch and the rocket was on the launchpad, ready to head toward orbit.

Led by veteran NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken, the flight marks a new era in piloted space flight.

In Jan. 28, 1986, for instance, the Shuttle Challenger launched in near-freezing temperatures that were 20 degrees Fahrenheit colder than the Solid Rocket Boosters' limit.

"There was a concern that if we did launch, it could actually trigger lightning", NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said.

The launch director of the SpaceX rocket set to lift off on Wednesday chose to delay the mission about 20 minutes before its scheduled departure time due to severe weather in the region. Space X designed and built both spacecraft.

The next launch was scheduled on May 30 and if this second launch attempt works out, then it will be the first time NASA astronauts have flown to the orbiting lab on their first commercial flight and from the American soil after almost a decade long.

Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken were the two Americans selected for the historic launch and are two of NASA's most experienced astronauts. This is not something I ever thought would happen.

"We're launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil".

Sorry everyone, NASA's SpaceX launch failed to make it out of Earth.

The last time astronauts launched from Florida was on NASA's final space shuttle flight in July 2011.

"Yes, a launch delayed because of weather is disappointing and can often be confusing as everything can appear flawless", the blog said.

Should Saturday's launch go ahead as planned, NASA will certify SpaceX's Crew Dragon pod for the space agency's Commercial Crew Programme to launch astronauts further into space.
