49ers Confirm Deebo Samuel Suffered a Broken Foot During Workout

The NFL Network reported the injury, to Samuel's left foot, is expected to come with a 12- to 16-week recovery following Thursday's surgery, which was performed by foot and ankle specialist Robert Anderson in Green Bay, Wisc.

The known players participating in throwing sessions at Brentwood Academy include quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens, C.J. Beathard and Broc Rutter, tight end George Kittle, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, receivers Kendrick Bourne, Deebo Samuel, Dante Pettis, Brandon Aiyuk, Jalen Hurd, Trent Taylor, Jauan Jennings, Shawn Poindexter and Chris Finke.

"Federal and state privacy laws prohibit our organization from commenting on the personal health of our employees", the 49ers said in a statement obtained by Rapoport. That would theoretically give him ample time to get back into game shape and potentially play in San Francisco's season-opener against the visiting Arizona Cardinals on September 13. Samuel has a long road ahead of him to get back in time for the start of the new season, but it sounds like he's off to a good start. The positive tests raise the unfortunate reality of a return to sports - no matter what protocols are in place, social distancing is impossible on the field.

The positive player was working out with other National Football League players in Nashville, Tennessee. In the National Football League, that includes Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott and Broncos safety Kareem Jackson.

The 49ers are scheduled to begin training camp July 28.
