Beijing flights cancelled to halt spread of Covid-19

The new coronavirus outbreak in Beijing is "extremely severe", according to local authorities, as more than 100 cases have been confirmed in five days.

Today's new cases took the number of confirmed infections in Beijing over the past five days to 106, as officials locked down nearly 30 communities in the city and tested tens of thousands of people. The city is now on the highest level of alert among all Chinese municipalities and provinces.

What is the origin of the cluster? . As of Tuesday, Macau is requiring all arrivals from Beijing to undergo 14 days of medical observation. The number shot up to 106 after 27 other cases were reported on Tuesday. Health services in the worst-hit cities of Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai have been swamped by the rising infections.

Authorities claimed more than 76,000 people were tested on Sunday.

The source of the new outbreak remains a mystery.

The boss of the Xinfadi market on Saturday told reporters that researchers had found traces of the novel coronavirus on a chopping board used to cut imported salmon.

Chinese Center for Disease Control (CDC) Chief epidemiologist Wu Zunyou (吳尊友) pointed out in a media interview that it would be hard to trace the source of the outbreak but that it was likely the infection had come from Europe based on genome sequencing results.

The meeting, presided over by the city's Party chief Cai Qi, also called for closely relying on citizens to jointly win the battle against COVID-19.

China, considered a very promising market by the industry, past year imported around 23,500 tonnes of Norwegian salmon.

Stores are now being supplied directly via government reserves of produce or receiving shipments directly from suppliers, bypassing wholesale markets in Beijing, which have been closed for disinfection, and will remain shuttered until further notice. The residential compounds have also established security checks.

Officials have closed 11 markets and disinfected thousands of food and beverage businesses in Beijing after the outbreak was detected.

Local officials said the city can conduct more than 90,000 coronavirus tests per day.

Online classes have been resumed and students are not allowed to return to school from Wednesday.

"The government raises the risk level of the epidemic on the basis of streets and districts, instead of the [entire] city".

"There's mention of a European sequence, but it's hard to say that with certainty unless there's a lot of other data on virus diversity in China", Koopmans said.
