Chelsea signing Werner gives me motivation, says Giroud

"I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans".

The arrival of the German puts more pressure on the other Chelsea forwards, including Giroud, however the French global said it is just a chance for him to step up and make life hard for manager Frank Lampard.

Former Germany midfielder Stefan Effenberg has criticised Timo Werner for being unwilling to see out RB Leipzig's Champions League campaign in favour of joining Chelsea in July.

The Germany worldwide forward has scored 11 goals in 29 games for his country.

However, Werner will not be available for the end of Leipzig's 2019/20 Champions League campaign in August as he is set to join Chelsea in July.

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta hopes that Timo Werner's imminent arrival can help them to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

"Together we have a successful future ahead of us".

His current employers have backed Werner to be a success in the Premier League and Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia, speaking to the Chelsea website, added: "We are very excited that Timo Werner has chosen to join Chelsea".

Werner is Chelsea's second signing for next season after they completed a £37m deal for Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech in February.

"He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven".

'I read in the newspaper that coronavirus influenced my decision, ' Giroud explained.

But he made his gratitude towards the German club clear by saying: "I had four great years in Leipzig".

Willian and Pedro, whose respective contracts expire on 30 June, are also expected to leave, while Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Michy Batshuayi and Ross Barkley are among the others said to be on the Londoners' discard pile.
