MLB's new pitch to players: 76-game season, smaller pay cut

MLB's new pitch to players: 76-game season, smaller pay cut

The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in zero games being played that actually count, but Major League Baseball reportedly made another proposal to start the season.

The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly with the negotiations ongoing.

In their latest offer Monday, owners presented the players with a proposal that brought a swift negative reaction from them, according to industry sources.

MLB also asked for 16 teams to make the playoffs, with eight each in the American League and National League, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. There would reportedly be no draft-pick compensation for free agents for a year and teams would not lose a draft pick for signing free agents.

"If the players desire to accept this proposal, we need to reach an agreement by Wednesday", deputy commissioner Dan Halem wrote in a letter to union negotiator Bruce Meyer that was obtained by The Associated Press. But the regular season would need to start by the first week of August to play at least a 50-game regular season that would conclude by September 27 with an expanded postseason in October.

After Monday's proposal from Major League Baseball, Phillies outfielder Andrew McCutchen didn't seem to embrace the latest idea.

Major League Baseball players have also offered a 114-game season and no more pay cuts, but that was turned down as well.

In May, MLB proposed an 82-game season with an additional sliding scale of pay cuts that would include topping stars Mike Trout and Gerrit Cole at less than 22% of the $36 million they had been set to earn.

In response, the league was reported to have been considering a season with as few as 50 games but such a proposal did not formally come to fruition. That would leave each player with about 70 per cent of his original pay.

The plan also features playoff pool money and no draft-pick compensation for signing players, Ravech adds.
