Steam Points are Valve's new loyalty reward system - here's how they work

One of the things you can do in this year's Steam Summer Sale is earn points that can be used to acquire digital items like animated stickers, backgrounds, and avatars. The 2020 Steam Summer Sale is slated to run until July 9 at 10AM PT, giving everyone two whole weeks to look over the behemoth promotion's wares. These points can then be redeemed in the Points Shop on a variety of items. For example, I have almost 8,000 in my account and the sale's been live for just a few minutes.

Starting now and running all the way through July 9, the Steam Summer Sale is your chance to score some of the hottest PC games out there for insane cheap.

The first thing you're probably going to want to know is how exactly you can get points. Bare in mind that Steam Points won't expire, but if you purchase something and then refund it you'll lose the points you acquired from that purchase, which makes sense.

Points can also be used on "Community Awards" for things like reviews or user-generated content: If you see something you like, you can call it out as extra helpful, a hot take, being amusing, or whatever. Some of these are from games and anything you buy is yours to keep forever - though do note, you can't trade them once they've been purchased. You'll earn points for spending money in the store, and can use those points to purchase profile cosmetics or awards to bestow on community content, including user reviews.

Here's a quick selection of five featured deals to get you started. Initially it looked similar to systems employed in previous sales, like the Night Market in the most recent Lunar New Year Sale, but it's actually a much bigger affair-and permanent, too.
