Trump seems ready to battle again over National Football League players kneeling

In a league where 70% of the players are black and those players are paid a salary that places them in the top 1% of wage earners in America, it is frankly incredible that this insidious "systemic racism" narrative even exists, much less is taken seriously.

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'get that son of a bitch off the field now. Out. Out".

The real drama unfolded earlier in the week when New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced that he was against the peaceful protests that many NFL players had taken in the past, and were planning to take again when they declared that they would be kneeling during the national anthem.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's video in which he states he and the NFL "were wrong" for not listening to the players during their protests in the past was prompted in part by a powerful "I am George Floyd" video that included stars such as reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson and Odell Beckham.

"If this is real, then it's a clear sign that the National Football League believes public sentiment on the issue of anthem protests specifically, and social justice in general has dramatically shifted".

"Could it be even remotely possible that in Roger Goodell's rather interesting statement of peace and reconciliation, he was intimating that it would now be O.K. for the players to KNEEL, or not to stand, for the National Anthem, thereby disrespecting our Country & our Flag?", Trump tweeted.

"We are listening. I am listening", Goodell said. Let us know in the comments.

During the 2018 season, the National Football League and NFLPA gave players the choice of either standing at attention during the anthem on the field or to remain in the locker room. Kaepernick and Eric Reid, the teammate who first knelt alongside him, are both without teams.

"I have [Kaepernick's] phone number if y'all need it!"

"Social media will demand that they do, and they will follow orders. Police brutality is a complex issue that can not be improved by symbolism and gestures on a football field".

Whatever the motivation, the fact remains: the conditions in the league, in rhetoric and theory, are improving toward the NFL accepting players' rights to protest. Before the 2018 season ever started the National Football League and the union agreed to ignore the policy and not punish players for protesting.

The league averaged 16.5 million viewers per game during the 2019 season, generating 47 of the top 50 most-watched shows.
