UK PM urged to form alliance over China security law

China's growing emphasis on the principle of "one country" has met resistance from Hong Kong's young activists, who underline the idea of "two systems".

President Trump on Friday opted to downgrade relations with Hong Kong, saying China's decision to impose a national security law was "absolutely smothering Hong Kong freedoms" and made it impossible for the U.S.to continue treating the city with a special status.

Trump had said that Beijing, by instituting the controversial law, "unilaterally imposed control over Hong Kong's security".

While the details of the Chinese law and the United States response will unfold in the days ahead, an important era in Hong Kong's history is coming to an end.

Security minister John Lee and Justice minister Teresa Cheng didn't hide their anger from reporters Saturday. As a result, he said the territory no longer warranted USA economic privileges.

The Chinese mission in United Nations in a strongly worded statement said, "Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China and Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs and allow no external interference".

The Law Council reiterates the concerns expressed by the Hong Kong Bar Association in questioning the legality of the proposed laws, and fears that the new laws will be absorbed into Hong Kong's Basic Law by way of decree from the Chief Executive. We love Hong Kong and it's a sad day.

"It reflects the Hong Kong capital markets are moving closer to the mainland trend in which technology companies are playing an important role in the market", he said.

Hong Kong is exempt from the tariffs applied to goods from the mainland, and the US has a large trade surplus with the territory.

"We persuade those USA politicians who are busy politicizing coronavirus to focus on the anti-epidemic works", Zhao said. As a result, the USA has bilateral agreements on trade, investment, law enforcement with Hong Kong.

Beijing's resolve to move forward appears to have been hardened by the months of anti-government protests previous year and a determination to prevent them from coming back this summer. Semiconductor products accounted for 70 percent of Korea's $31.9 billion exports to Hong Kong previous year. Demonstrators are expected to take to the streets on Sunday.

"The world is now suffering as a result of the malfeasance of the Chinese government", he says, adding that China "instigated a global pandemic that has cost over 100,000 American lives". But it's likely to be a long process that serves to put China on notice that Hong Kong's perks are in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, throngs of people lined up at DHL courier outlets across the city, many to send documents to the U.K.to apply for or renew what is known as a British National (Overseas) passport.

White House Economic Adviser Larry Kudlow criticized Beijing last week, but on trade told CNBC: "It's a complex relationship".

But he notably avoided personal criticism of President Xi Jinping, with whom he has boasted of having a friendship even as the two powers feud over an increasing range of issues.

The German minister also said the World Health Organization needs reform to make any difference for the future, and the European Union must take a leading role and engage more financially.

Trump's order could also trigger retaliation. Trump also said he would limit visas for certain Chinese students.

China has asked state-owned firms to halt purchases of soybeans and pork from the United States, two people familiar with the matter said, following Washington's move over Hong Kong.
