Schefter clarifies that this is not the final renaming or rebranding of the team name, though it does confirm that, going forward, the Redskins team name is a thing of the past.

Maybe the Washington NFL team didn't want to release its new name at the same time Seattle's National Hockey League franchise disclosed its nickname, logo and uniform.

Washington's NFL team will be called the "Washington Football Team" during the 2020 season.

According to ESPN, the Washington Football Team will not change its signature burgundy and gold color scheme, and the former team nickname will be removed from the front of the team's jerseys. This is the name it wants to use until the pending adoption of a new name in the future.

Washington made a decision to drop the Redskins name after intense pressure from team sponsors including FedEx, which owns the naming rights to the franchise's stadium. Its helmet logo will be replaced by the players' number in gold, in much the same manner used by the Alabama Crimson Tide. Corporate sponsors Bank of America and PepsiCo had also called on Washington to change the name.

"Warriors", "Red Tails" and "Red Wolves" are among the possible replacement names that have been floated by fans.

Team owner Dan Snyder had been a boyhood fan of the 87-year-old team - which was named the Redskins in 1933 when it was still based in Boston - and had vowed to never change its moniker.

The name of the team has been a source of elevated controversy in recent years. National Basketball Association star LeBron James, a fan of the rival Dallas Cowboys, wrote on Twitter.
