Coronavirus likely infects 25m Iranians: Rouhani

After a few weeks of lockdown in the capital city of Tehran, when the country first encountered the pandemic, most of the businesses and state organizations resumed working while considering preventive measures.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani attends a National Combat Board Meeting with Coronavirus in Tehran, Iran on July 18, 2020.

Of every 1,000 people infected with the coronavirus, 500 show no symptoms, 350 ones have mild symptoms without the need for hospital admission, while 150 others need to be hospitalized, the president added.

Iran has estimated that 25 million Iranians have contracted Covid-19 so far.

As he said, 30 million to 35 million of Iranians are at risk of being infected by the virus.

"A report from the research department of the health ministry has assessed that 25 million Iranians have been infected with the disease so far", Rouhani said, according to the semiofficial Fars news agency.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has said lockdowns over COVID-19 pandemic may lead to street protests over economic problems, though in Tehran, authorities have chose to impose some restrictions again over newly spiking reported deaths from the coronavirus. The pandemic has also further debilitated the country's severely crippled economy, already struggling from US imposed sanctions.

Iran, the worst-hit country in the Middle East, has been scrambling to contain the pandemic since it reported its first two COVID-19 deaths in February.

Iran has faced scrutiny about their reporting of coronavirus cases and deaths, which government officials admit are probably well under the actual count. The nation marked the 41st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution with mass demonstrations and then held a parliamentary election in which authorities desperately sought to boost turnout.

President Hassan Rouhani shared these findings Saturday, showing significantly higher numbers than the roughly 271-tho, 000 and cases previously reported by officials. However, it's believed many more died at home.

"We have not yet achieved herd immunity and we have no choice but to be united and break the chain of transmission of the coronavirus", he said, citing the results of a study by the Iranian health ministry.
