F1 confirms Nurburgring, Portimao and Imola on 2020 calendar

The Grands Prix in the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Canada have been scrapped this year but three races in Europe have been added to the coronavirus-affected season, Formula One said Friday.

The three new additions bring the tally of confirmed race dates to 13, filling the October/November slate which would normally be occupied by Japan, USA and Mexico as F1 aims for a 15 to 18-race schedule.

There will be an F1 debut for Portugal's Portimao track and a return for Germany's Nurburgring and Imola in Italy.

The three new races bring the total number of confirmed rounds on the 2020 calendar to 13, with F1 still planning to finish the year with two rounds in Bahrain and a season finale in Abu Dhabi by mid-December.

Their events were scheduled for late October through mid-November respectively, allowing Formula 1 greater time to assess the situation, but a decision has now been made to cancel the rounds.

It had been hoped to pair the rescheduled inaugural Vietnam race with the postponed Chinese round across November 15/22, but China's decision to cancel all worldwide sporting events for the rest of 2020 has wrecked this plan.

"We are pleased that we continue to make strong progress in finalising our plans for the 2020 season and re excited to welcome Nürburgring, Portimão and Imola to the revised calendar", Chase Carey, the chairman and CEO of Formula 1, said.

For example, the map of the Hockenheimring has already been replaced by the Nürnbergring map and the maps of the Portuguese Portimao and the Italian Imola have also been added.

"We want to pay tribute to our incredible partners in the Americas and look forward to being back with them next season when they will once again be able to thrill millions of fans around the world".

An attentive fan has stumbled upon an extra hint for the return of Formula 1 at Portimao, Imola and Nürnberg. The race will be called the Eifel Grand Prix, harking back to the historic Eifelrennen name used for pre-war grands prix at the original Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit.

Portimao hosted Formula 1 testing a decade ago but has never held a Formula 1 grand prix, with Portugal's last race coming in 1996, when it took place at Estoril.

Events in Asia in November - most prominently Vietnam - remain possible but hopes have now ended for any grands prix to be held in the Americas in 2020.

As announced in April, the season kicked off on July 5 with the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg, Austria. The German track last staged a grand prix in 2013.
