India’s Covid-19 tally surges past 7 lakh, death toll at 20160

India's death count due to COVID-19 crossed 20,000 on Tuesday with 467 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.

Chile has witnessed 15,459.8 COVID-19 cases per million population, while Peru has 9,070.8 cases per million people. The tally has been compiled as per information provided by respective states and Union territories.

Arunachal Pradesh reported 270 cases, Mizoram has 197 cases, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has 141, Sikkim has registered 125 infections so far, while Meghalaya has recorded 80 cases.

India has now taken the third spot in the list of nations worst hit by coronavirus. India is now preceded only by Brazil and the US. The news of India surpassing Russian Federation came days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Indians in an address to the nation that India was comparatively in a "better position" to many countries in the world. Russian Federation now has 6.8 lakh cases.

The number of recoveries stood at 4,39,947, while there are 2,59,557 active cases of COVID-19.

"Thus, 60.77 per cent of the patients have recovered so far", it said. Over 15,500 patients were declared cured in 24 hours.

The central government still keeps denying that community transmission is taking place in India.

Any more alarming rise will severely test an already struggling health care system in the country. With 793 labs in the government sector and 322 private labs, there are as many as 1,115 labs in the country.

- Kerala has reported a total of 5,579 coronavirus positive patients, of which 2,252 are active.

The National Health Council said 403 were being treated for Covid-19 while 121 people were placed under isolation.

India has improved testing by over four times in recent past with experts saying that increase in burden is a result of increase in testing. More than 1,100 people are expected to be enrolled in the first two phases of human clinical trials for COVAXIN, an application by developers Bharat Biotech said Friday.

Globally, more than 11,451,000 confirmed cases have been recorded with more than 534,000 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University in the US. The number of COVID-19 deaths in Mumbai has gone up by 39, to 4,935.

A similar surge was reported one day earlier, as 24,015 new cases were recorded Saturday, according to Worldometer data.
