Klopp and Mourinho slam decision to overturn Man City's European ban

What we have done in the last decade is because of what happened on the pitch.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho called the decision "disgraceful" and seemed confused as to why Man City are still in the Champions League, even though they were fined by UEFA.

City are the latest club to have shown an interest in landing the former Ajax defender, who has also been linked with a potential switch to Inter in the past few months too.

"The CAS award emphasised that most of the alleged breaches reported by the Adjudicatory Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) were either not established or time-barred".

"We have the right to defend ourselves when we believe what we have done is correct".

The club were accused of deliberately inflating the value of income from sponsors with links to the Abu Dhabi United Group, which is also owned by City owner Sheikh Mansour, to avoid falling foul of FFP rules between 2012 and 2016.

UEFA also released a statement as they admitted there was "insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold all of the CFCB's conclusions in this specific case and that numerous alleged breaches were time-barred".

The club will still have to pay a fine, which has been reduced from €30 million (£25m/$33m) to €10m (£9m/$11m).

City's victory in court will raise fresh questions over how effectively UEFA can police FFP.

City firmly refuted any suggestion they were guilty of any wrongdoing. "If Man City is not guilty of it, to be punished by some million is a disgrace". If you're not guilty then you shouldn't have a fine.

"It's a disgraceful decision", Mourinho said at his pre-match press conference.

The ruling also has an impact on the clubs now below City in the Premier League table.

And Mourinho believes that in light of the City decision, any prospective new owners will not feel the need to comply with the regulations. "New owners will have this feeling the circus opened the door so let's go and enjoy it".

So both teams will be going for the Premier League and the Champions League and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out again next time out.

"If City were out of that competition for next season, then they would have so much more time to focus and dedicate their energies on domestic trophies and obviously that includes the Premier League". It is there for protecting teams and the competition so that nobody overspends and have to make sure the money they want to spend is based on the right sources.
