Police say a man drove through the main pedestrian entrance of 1 Sussex Drive on Thursday morning.

A LinkedIn account belonging to Corey Hurren identifies him as a member of the Canadian Rangers, an organization within the Canadian Armed Forces reserve.

The RCMP have not provided a motive for Thursday's incident, but have said that neither Payette nor Trudeau were present at the time. Police say Hurren was apprehended without incident about an hour and an half after he entered the grounds. Instead, they live in a cottage on the grounds of the Governor General's residence.

The iconic Rideau Hall has long served as the home to Canada's governors general, but Trudeau and his family have also lived in a home on the property since he was elected prime minister. The RCMP said the intruder was "rapidly contained" by RCMP members on patrol.

The man then ran up a path, carrying what looked like a rifle, to Rideau Hall's rose garden.

Duheme confirmed the suspect had "several weapons" in his possession at the time of the incident, but did not go into detail on what the weapons were. He responded at 6:53, and for more than 90 minutes "a constant dialogue was maintained", concluding with the suspect's arrest at 8:30 a.m.

Duheme said immediate measures have been put in place to bolster security on the grounds following Thursday morning's events. He said Ottawa wasn't doing enough, according to sources.

"The conversation was fluid, went well so there was no need to escalate anything any further and what we wanted to do was resolve it at the lowest level and not have any injuries", he said.
