COVID-19 recovery rate improves to 76.47 per cent

A health worker takes a nasal swab sample to test for COVID-19 at a state transport bus stand in Ahmedabad, India, Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020.

Given the rate at which infections are piling up - there have been more new coronavirus cases per day than any other country since August 4 - India is likely to move past Brazil inside a week. The country also reports a recovery rate of almost 77 percent.

India added a record 80,092 fresh Covid cases on Sunday, becoming the first country in the world to cross the 80,000-mark in one single day since the outbreak of the pandemic, even as the week ending August 30 turned out to be the worst of the month.

India reported 76,472 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, slightly lower than the numbers seen in the last couple of days, but extending a run that has made the country's outbreak now the world's worst.

It said, effective implementation of Centre's strategic and graded "Test, Track and Treat" approach has led to higher recoveries and lower fatality.

The Health Ministry on Sunday also reported 948 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking total fatalities to 63,498. Delhi Metro, which claims to transport around 15 lakh people per day, has put out strict guidelines to minimise contact.

The cumulative tests for covid-19 have crossed 4.14 crore (4,14,61,636). The number of active cases is close to the 8-lakh mark at 7,84,768.

The main opposition Congress party has called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to set out a firm plan to stop the spread of the pandemic.

So far, the biggest contributor to the new surge has been the western state of Maharashtra, home to the commercial capital of Mumbai.

India has the third highest number of infections, behind the U.S. and Brazil, with more than 3.5 million cases among the population of 1.3 billion.

India's federal government announced the New Delhi subway will begin the reopening process September 7, although schools, universities and movie theaters will remain closed until the end of the month, according to the AP.
