Georgia student who took hallway image says she's getting threats

A Georgia high school sophomore who shared a viral photo of a packed school hallway said Sunday she has been receiving threats since posting the image last week.

Six students and three staffers at a high school in Georgia tested positive for COVID-19 days after photos of a crowded hallway with no students wearing masks in the same building went viral, reports The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That high school is North Paulding High in Dallas, Georgia, and this week, it's shut down again because at least nine students and staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.

Now students will take online classes Monday and Tuesday, Paulding County Schools Superintendent Brian Ott said in a letter to parents Sunday.

Cherokee County schools resumed in-person learning on Monday, August 3.

"As I've said before, we have come a long way, but we are not out of the woods yet and we can not take our foot off the gas", Kemp said.

"We have consulted with the Department of Public Health and are temporarily switching the instructional model to digital learning at NPHS", the letter read in part.

"We could have just delayed opening like many other schools", she said.

The school district suspended two students who shared the images, prompting another wave of negative attention from critics who said administrators were silencing them.

Two students were suspended for sharing images and videos on social media that showed throngs of students - majority without protective facial coverings - filling school corridors last week.

Hightower said in his letter that numerous seniors in those online photos "wear masks routinely" - though the schools don't require them to.

This is what it looks like even with split dismissal.

Watters had earlier said the school told her she was being suspended for violating the code of conduct by using a cellphone and social media in school hours and violating student privacy by photographing them.

Hannah told CNN that she and her family and friends have received threatening messages over the uproar. The number of confirmed infections in the United States has now topped the 5 million mark.

The Trump administration has pressured schools to fully reopen in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, school officials in a nearby metro Atlanta county reported 12 students and two staff members across a dozen schools tested positive for the virus during their first week back at school.

Weingarten added that the AFT will allow local unions to make the final decision on whether to order any strikes.
