Google Nearby Share for Android feature rolls out

Apart from sharing files with other Android phones, Nearby Share will also work with Chromebooks in the coming months.

Nearby Share will let you quickly send and receive files with the people around you and uses a mix of protocols.

Google has confirmed that initially select Pixel and Samsung phones will be getting Nearby Share for now.

Nearby Share is rolling out to smartphones that are running on Android 6.0 and above as Google said it makes it easier to instantly share files, links, pictures while protecting your privacy.

With the launch of Android 10, Google quietly removed Android's previous local file sharing feature when it dropped support for Android Beam.

Keeping the vast userbase in mind, Nearby Share automatically chooses the best protocol available - Bluetooth Low Energy, WebRTC, or peer-to-peer WiFi to share files between two devices. This will happen through privacy settings as users can select "hidden", visible to "some contacts" or visible to "all contacts" as per their needs. Under some contacts, you can choose the contacts you want to receive files via Nearby Share. Google is uniquely equipped to roll out a simple, fast, and unified file-sharing service thanks to its control over Google Play Services, which is installed on the vast majority of Android devices sold outside of China regardless of the manufacturer. While we've heard in comments and emails that there are other services that do all this in one way, shape or form, there are no 3rd-party services that will simply be available to every Android and Chrome OS user out of the box in the coming months. Ultimately, if you need to share something with a person you don't know well enough to have contact info for, you won't actually have to change settings to initiate a transfer.

Last year, we learned that Google was preparing a new file-sharing service for Android. Users can choose to use the "Data" mode to use mobile data to transfer smaller files when required.

The Nearby Share feature is quite similar to Apple's AirDrop.
