India’s COVID-19 case count surges past 3 million mark

Officials underlined that the current active cases (6,92,028) compose the actual case load of the country.

India reported 68,898 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours - the third straight daily increase above 60,000 - taking the total to 2.91 million.

India is third in the world behind the United States with 55,73,501 cases and 1,73,114 deaths, followed by Brazil with 35,01,975 infections and 1,12,304 deaths.

Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported a net addition of 13,165 cases.

Andhra Pradesh (1,595), Karnataka (1,315), Kerala (1,109), Odisha (958).

West Bengal follows the national capital, with 1,25,922 cases and 2,581 deaths.

The number of deaths has surpassed 8 lakh around the world.

According to the data, there are still 697,330 active cases across India, even as 2,222,577 people have been successfully cured and discharged from hospitals.

However, by night, a PTI tally showed India's COVID-19 caseload at 30,37,657, death toll at 56,762 and recoveries at 22,71,054.

India has scaled another new peak.

The total recoveries surged to 21,58,946 with 62,282 more people recuperating from the infection in the past 24 hours.

India's doubling time for total cases stands at 27.9 days, for active cases at 47.8 days, and for deaths at 37.9 days. A total of 8,05,985 samples were tested on Thursday for identification of the disease which has taken the cumulative tests to 3,3,467,237. "We have not reached the peak or started plateauing as far as cases are concerned", Guleria, who is also the part of a core team monitoring the pandemic, had said.
