Joe Biden will no longer travel to Milwaukee to accept Democratic nomination

Former Vice President Joe Biden will not travel to Wisconsin to accept the Democratic U.S. presidential nomination during the party's national convention this month because of coronavirus concerns, party officials said on Wednesday.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will no longer travel to the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee to deliver his acceptance speech as planned.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump told Fox & Friends about potentially delivering his acceptance speech from the White House.

"From the very beginning of this pandemic, we put the health and safety of the American people first", said Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the DNC will be mostly virtual and Biden will accept the Democratic nomination from his home in Delaware. "I think all of us have to keep this in perspective", he said. "It would be the easiest from the standpoint of security".

The Republican convention was initially set for Charlotte, North Carolina, before Trump moved part of the festivities to Jacksonville, Florida, after North Carolina's governor warned he might not permit a huge crowd.

Neither the Biden campaign nor DNC officials offered details about how Biden might accept the nomination, which even in the pandemic could be a made-for-screen event that reaches tens of millions of voters via television and online. "We are thinking about doing it from the White House because there's no movement".

But a surge of coronavirus cases in Florida prompted Trump to cancel those plans. This would be the mother of all Hatch Act violations - the epitome of a narcissistic president who has never understood the separation of his own political and personal interests and the interests of the United States.

Trump claimed in his interview with Fox News on Wednesday that the USA would "probably be in very good shape" in terms of the pandemic by polling day on 3 November.

Other government employees involved with putting on the event would, however, be vulnerable to violating the act.
