Microsoft to continue talks to buy TikTok from ByteDance after Trump call

"Here's the deal. I don't mind if - whether it's Microsoft or somebody else - a big company, a secure company, a very American company buys it", Trump told reporters at the White House. "We want no security problems with China".

Microsoft will continue discussions to buy TikTok's business in the United States after its chief executive Satya Nadella and USA president Donald Trump held talks on Sunday, the world's largest software maker said. TikTok says it doesn't censor videos and it wouldn't give the Chinese government access to U.S. user data.

Trump gave the company's Chinese parent ByteDance until mid-September to strike a deal. We set a date, I set a date, of around September 15th, at which point it's going to be out of business in the United States.

In a Monday afternoon press conference, Trump added: "Whether it's Microsoft, or somebody else, the Chinese, what the price is, the United States should get a very large percentage of that price because we're making it possible".

US President Donald Trump announced Monday he would approve of Microsoft or any major US company buying the social media app TikTok.

China had "limited ability" to provide protection to these Chinese companies by retaliating against U.S. companies because the United States had technological superiority and influence with its allies, it added. "And I think you will see the president's announcement shortly".

Mr Trump said TikTok will "close down" in the USA on September 15 unless a deal can be negotiated between TikTok, an appropriate company and the U.S. government.

President Trump says the USA should get a "very large percentage" of any potential TikTok sale because 'we're making it possible'. "For example, we recently learned a retail store partnered with DeepCam LLC - a company with links to China and its authoritarian government - secretly to deploy facial recognition technology at hundreds of locations, collecting information on countless Americans", they wrote.

Trump agreed to give China's ByteDance 45 days to negotiate a sale of popular short-video app TikTok to Microsoft, three people familiar with the matter said Sunday.

USA officials have said TikTok poses a national risk because of the personal data it handles.

Both its huge user base and its algorithm for collecting data make it hugely valuable.

"The most obvious beneficiaries are Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter, with Snapchat likely being the biggest beneficiary", said investment analysts at Lightshed Partners.

Navarro said the Chinese government and military use Microsoft software "to do all the things they do".

"We have always been committed to ensuring user data security, as well as the platform neutrality and transparency", he said.

"While we encounter mounting complexities across the geopolitical landscape and significant external pressure, our response teams have been working around-the-clock and giving up their weekends over the past few weeks to ensure the best possible outcome". "During this process, Microsoft looks forward to continuing dialogue with the United States government, including with the president", the statement read.

China's foreign ministry pushed back Monday, calling Washington hypocritical for demanding TikTok be sold.

"To the extent that any such data is now stored or backed-up outside the US, Microsoft would ensure that this data is deleted from servers outside the country after it is transferred", the company said.
