Nebraska still hoping for opportunity to play college football this fall

Long-time sports personality Dan Patrick reported Sunday that multiple sources told him the Big Ten and PAC-12 are prepared to postpone their seasons Tuesday, while the Big 12 and ACC remain on the fence.

The Big Ten presidents and chancellors met this morning at 9:30 a.m. and announced the decision shortly after 2 p.m. Now, 2020 will become the first calendar year in which the rivals won't have played since 1935.

Other than football, the affected fall sports are men's and women's cross country and soccer, field hockey and women's volleyball.

"Our primary responsibility is to make the best possible decisions in the interest of our students, faculty and staff", added Morton Schapiro, Chair of the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors and Northwestern University President.

Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren apparently prefers to hold a spring football season, but a final decision has not been made. Had those in charge looked ahead and realized sports would be threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to take lives - over 160,000 as of publishing this post - months later, maybe they would have done something instead of where we're at now, with our president continuing to simply say "it'll go away". "Ultimately, our decision was guided by science and a deep commitment to the health and welfare of student-athletes". Tuesday's announcement effectively ended preseason camp, which began Friday.

Paul Chryst was originally expected to be available after the first day of fall camp on Monday.

Players, coaches and even some politicians made a push Monday against outright cancellation.

"Look, players are a lot safer with us than they are running around at home".

MSU linebacker Marcel Lewis, who opted out Saturday, said he lost a family member to the virus and doesn't want to risk play. Frost said over Zoom.

The conference includes universities with powerhouse sports programs, such as Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State.

That's the overriding problem with college football. Franklin shared in a statement on twitter.

The announcement came after weeks of speculation that the fall season might be canceled over safety concerns due to rising coronavirus infections.

Some officials have raised the possibility that teams in conferences that postpone or cancel their fall seasons could pursue alternate options, such as scheduling games against schools in conferences that still plan to play.
