Over 3 million people infected with Covid-19 in India

Health authorities reported 10,339 new cases and 912 deaths on Sunday, bringing the total to 3,044,940.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh reported 5,375 new COVID-19 cases, 4,638 discharges, 70 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking active cases to 48,294 and deaths to 2,867.

The total active case load across the country stands at 6,97,330, according to the health ministry's data updated at 8 a.m.

Building on the continuum of care approach, the policy of testing aggressively, tracing comprehensively and treating efficiently, focussed attention on effective surveillance and house-to-house contact tracing has led to early detection and identification of COVID-19 cases, it said.

Starting from one test in January this year through a single lab in Pune, India has exceeded cumulative tests of more than three crore 50 lakh tests today.

India has the third-highest caseload after the United States and Brazil, and its 56,706 fatalities are the fourth-highest in the world.

The COVID-19 case fatality rate has declined to 1.87 per cent, the data said. Around 22,80,566 lakh people have recovered.

The country today crossed the mark of 10 lakh tests a day.

A record number of daily tests has been achieved by evaluating and validating laboratories for COVID-19 testing across the country, the ICMR said. Today, with 983 labs in the government sector and 532 private labs, 1515 labs are providing comprehensive testing facilities to the people. India has been reporting the highest number of daily coronavirus cases for the last 18 days. This has boosted the daily testing capacity, the ministry said.

Schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions continue to remain shut across the country.
