Players unite in push to save college season, create union

"Lawrence took to Twitter on Sunday night to join the "#WeWantToPlay" movement, and he stated the case for why he believes the 2020 college football season should not be canceled. The conference's players also want a 50-50 revenue share for athletes.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said no decisions on the season have been made, but conceded the outlook has not improved. There is concern it could be a long-term complication of contracting the virus even in young, healthy people, a group that has usually avoided severe cardiovascular symptoms.

Earlier Monday, U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, a Republican from Nebraska, wrote a letter to Big Ten Conference presidents and chancellors urging them not to cancel the season.

Two of college football's most famous quarterbacks took to Twitter late Sunday night to call for the formation of a players' union.

"Everyone's thought about it, but since I made the decision to play, I haven't thought about it", Lawrence said after Clemson's practice Friday, per ESPN. The phrases mimicked what the Pac-12 United movement was doing a week ago with demands on revenue sharing, mandated health and safety guidelines and guarantee eligibility and scholarships this year.

With a graphic designed by Dallas Hobbs, a 6-foot-6, 285-pound defensive end at Washington State, the players' message stated that "we all want to play football this season" and listed their demands. "We trust our medical staff here at Baylor University, and we believe they are going to put us in the best position possible to be safe". The efforts rose to another level when a collection of players from all of the Power 5 conferences issued a joint statement with the National College Players Association.

The final call on whether major college football will be played this season rests in the hands of the university presidents who oversee the largest conferences. So does Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said he has heard the same from Fighting Irish football players. But they want to be protected and clearly don't feel that's the case now.
