Thai protests: Student leader Parit Chiwarak arrested on sedition charges

Thousands of people gathered in Bangkok on Sunday to protest the continuing influence of the Thai military in politics, even after the country returned to civilian rule.

Some students have also called for reform of the monarchy - once a taboo subject.

Under Thai regulation, any individual criticising the royal family members faces extended jail sentences.

The day before student leader Parit's arrest, Prayut said the protesters' demands were "unacceptable" for the country's majority, calling the pro-democracy movement "risky".

Police closed off surrounding main roads to stop incoming traffic, and an official at Bangkok's Metropolitan Police Bureau said the crowd size had grown to 10,000 by 6:00pm (1100 GMT).

"We want a new election and a new parliament from the people", student activist Patsalawalee Tanakitwiboonpon, 24, told the crowd.

Protest leaders triggered controversy last week when they expanded their agenda, publicly criticizing Thailand's constitutional monarchy and issuing a 10-point manifesto calling for its reform.

Observers claimed Sunday's protest at Bangkok's Democracy Monument was just one of the greatest anti-govt demonstrations considering the fact that Key Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha took electrical power in a 2014 coup.

"We are here from all different groups, all different ages", said Kukkik, a 29-year-old postgraduate student who only wanted to give one name, as protesters chanted, "Down with dictatorship, long live democracy".

The BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok says recent inclusion of the monarchy in the protesters' demands has electrified the debate.

Nearby, dozens of supporters of the monarchy also staged a rally.

But the armed forces had taken ways to entrench its political function, and the election observed Mr Prayuth re-put in.

The newest wave of protests commenced in February immediately after the pro-democracy Long run Forward Party (FFP) was dissolved by court docket purchase. It was the first major protest against the government since the easing of restrictions imposed to stem the coronavirus outbreak.

Tensions increased in June when Wanchalearm Satsaksit, a prominent activist who had been living in Cambodia in exile since 2014, went missing.

Other factors have also emerged, including anger over accusations of government corruption and a feeling that the Thai elite acts with impunity.

Demonstrators said Sunday's protest shows broader support for change in the Southeast Asian country beyond the student groups that have organised nearly daily protests for the past month.

The arrest took place as the Thammasat University student prepared to join an anti-government rally in Nonthaburi.

But three student protest leaders have already been arrested and released on bail on charges over the earlier protests, and police say there are warrants for the arrest of a further 12.
