University to launch surveillance testing Friday

The cases have been linked to at least two off-campus parties, and the majority of students testing positive are senior undergraduates, mostly male, said school spokesman Paul Browne.

There are now seven active COVID-19 cases across students, staff, and faculty, according to the university's COVID-19 dashboard.

The meetup - the latest example of college students defying school guidance on the deadly virus - was met with a quick rebuke by a top university official.

The coronavirus surge among college students, which was predicted by public health experts, began in earnest this week as many schools opened for the fall semester. We will continue to adhere to this policy due to the fact that we desire students to be forthright with us, so that we can find the source of the infections in ... "We may also need to reach students - or someone on their behalf - in a public health emergency".

"By randomly selecting a proportion of asymptomatic students, faculty and staff members from across the University to test, we will be able to monitor changes in disease prevalence throughout our campuses, identify trends and take steps to address a possible outbreak in a particular group or location before it occurs", Wolgast said.

Several University of CT students were evicted from their dorm rooms following a packed on-campus party that violated the school's coronavirus policy.

Notre Dame isn't the only university backtracking on its on-campus reopening. Students are required to get tested for the virus prior to settling into their dorm rooms. In-person instruction began on August 18. The school has canceled fall break in order to complete the semester by November 24, with finals week scheduled to be conducted online during the week of November 30-Dec. 4.

Notre Dame is not yet sending students home, and instead advised students to stay on campus except under emergency circumstances. COVID-19 is far deadlier for older people and those with underlying or co-morbid conditions that make them more susceptible to contracting the virus. These decisions and others have been part-and-parcel of a high-handed, opaque mode of governance that has disempowered faculty and other voices within the University.

Testing results will be aggregated and displayed on the university's new COVID-19 Dashboard, as well as reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. An additional 25 students are self-quarantining after potential exposure as of Tuesday, according to UConn deputy spokesman, Michael Enright.

At The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington D.C., president John Garvey has announced that only freshmen and transfer students with fewer than 30 college credits would be coming to campus; all other students will be completing the semester online.

The undisclosed number of students were booted from their on-campus housing pending a school investigation, school officials said. Student-athletes are also being tested periodically per state requirements.

"We [at CUA] are watching other universities close soon after opening". Face-to-face and hybrid offerings will begin on campus on Monday, September 21.
