Windsor's COVID-19 cases increase by 11 over weekend

The COVID-19 outbreaks on local farms have affected hundreds of migrant workers, and held Windsor-Essex back from Stage 3, which the rest of the province entered last month.

During his daily briefing on Monday, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed shared his thoughts about the region moving to stage three of the province's recovery plan.

"Thanks to the collective efforts of our frontline health care workers, public health experts, and the people of Windsor-Essex, more businesses can hang up their "Open for Business" sign, and more people can go back to work", said Premier Doug Ford.

Based on the information included in the provincial summary, there are 994 active cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, including 49 individuals who are hospitalized with the coronavirus. Three staff members there have tested positive for the virus since July 10.

Ahmed said health officials are making progress in the region to contain outbreaks on local farms.

Since yesterday's report, the province reported 22,275 more COVID tests have been completed.

Ahmed said a number of factors were considered when it came to the decision to move the community forward, including local hospital capacity, which is now at 85 per cent.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has announced 11 new cases of COVID-19 in the region.

It marks the first time in a week that the province has reported over 100 cases.

Health Minister Christine Elliott acknowledged the "slight uptick" but said the trend in the province remains downward.

This area now has 2,379 confirmed cases since the pandemic began with 71 deaths and 2,135 cases listed as resolved.
