3 firefighters injured battling California wildfire

California, and the West Coast in general, was hit hard over Labor Day weekend by an oppressive heatwave. Temperatures have dropped since then, but high winds are expected to fan the flames until Wednesday.

"Where we were at. we had no idea how big the fire was or how much was going on down here to help organize rescues and how many people were stranded", Joe Ebright told NBC's "Today" show from his home in Clovis, California.

Troops have conducted "mop-up" operations on areas where the fire is under control to ensure flames do not return, said Nicole Hawk, spokeswoman for U.S. Army North, which is overseeing the military response to wildfires in California. It broke out in the Sierra Mountains - a major tourism spot - north-east of Fresno on Friday.

More than 14,100 firefighters were battling 24 different wildfires as of Monday afternoon, the fire department said in a tweet.

However, the Creek Fire has yet to be contained at all, according to CAL FIRE.

According to The Washington Post, about 50 hikers remain trapped at the Vermilion Valley Resort with all escape routes cut off by the fire. They are not in immediate danger, officials say. Earlier rescue attempts made last night had to be aborted due to heavy smoke.

"The difficulty of the helicopters trying to get through the smoke has proven a challenge during the day", fire chief Escobedo told reporters.

Lisa Ebright said they can't go camping again until purchasing a satellite phone, and Joe Ebright promised that's now tops on his shopping list.

Overnight, 35 people were rescued by helicopter - 13 from China Peak and 22 from Lake Edison. The fire has devastated the small town of Big Creek, destroying at least two dozen homes, the Los Angeles Times reports.

About 1,060 firefighters are attacking the fire from opposite sides of the San Joaquin River, with one team focusing on Madera County and the other on Fresno County.

Parts of Monterey County are under evacuation orders and warnings, and Los Padres is one of eight national forests that the Forest Service ordered temporarily closed beginning Monday night, citing "the threat of unprecedented and risky fire conditions".

Bobcat fire in Angeles National Forest has destroyed almost 5,000 acres and forced the evacuation of the Mount Wilson Observatory.

So far, no fatalities have been confirmed, but the Fresno County Sheriff's office reported late Monday night that an older gentleman in the area died from a medical episode, unrelated to the fires. In recent years, several large-scale parties have gone wrong, even resulting in the death of a woman in 2019.

California has seen 900 wildfires since August 15, many of them started by an intense series of thousands of lightning strikes in mid-August.

Eight people have died this fire season and almost 4,000 structures have been either damaged or destroyed.

That fire was started by Pacific Gas & Electric power lines amid strong winds and tinder dry conditions. More than 170,000 residents are affected.

The previous record was set in 2018, with 1.96 million acres (793.184 hectares) burned, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) which began taking records in 1987. "It's a little unnerving because September and October are historically our worst months for fires".
