Alberta's top doctor to give COVID-19 update Thursday afternoon

Dr. Deena Hinshaw is Alberta's chief medical officer.

At least two cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at Henry Wise Wood High School in Calgary, resulting in an outbreak being declared, Alberta Health Services confirmed Wednesday.

San Diego Unified and school districts in south county, where COVID-19 is disproportionately concentrated, have been adamant about not reopening until community spread of the coronavirus decreases further, to avoid having to close again or put students and staff at risk.

The list of Calgary and area schools with COVID-19 cases expanded Wednesday, with at least 13 schools in Calgary that have sent out a note informing parents and guardians of COVID-19 cases.

"We are seeing this explosion of case reports".

At Ross Sheppard School in Edmonton, a letter posted online Tuesday noted that students in three Grade 10 classes need to be tested and must self-isolate at home for 14 days. "A deep clean of the school was completed before students returned to class today". At this time, based on advice from AHS, Chinook High School will remain open.

The school closure is one of several that some school and health experts were expecting to happen in San Diego County, which gave the green light for all schools to reopen on September 1 because the county's COVID-19 case rate was improving.

"We should be concerned about recent increases in the total number of active cases", Kenney said Wednesday.

An investigation indicates the transmission was not acquired at school.

The province said the student attended the school between 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and rode on Winnipeg Transit Route 16, boarding at the stop at Graham Avenue and Vaughan Street at 7:51 a.m.

"I guess the more accurate or more mobile a student or teacher is, then the more exposures the health department needs to follow up on", says Highlander. "We know this news can be distressing and supports are available". "Infection prevention control measures (physical distancing, masking, hand hygiene, environmental cleaning) have also been reviewed with the school".

School board member, Highlander, says these closings are not ideal and that the board understands the impact that school closures have on parents and students, but expressed the importance of following safety protocols.

The province said this case will be discussed during Thursday's COVID-19 news conference.
