Amazon announces upgraded Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite

With nearly everyone stuck at home nowadays due to the pandemic, it makes sense that Amazon has not only added new features to Fire TV, but also introduced two new Fire TV Sticks.

Both the Fire TV Stick Lite and Fire TV Stick are available for preorder now in the USA and ship on September 30.

The Fire TV Stick retains its $39.99 price point, while the aggressively priced Fire TV Stick Lite starts at $29.99.

Amazon's Fire TV Stick 4K continues to be the company's most powerful media streamer.

The new $40 Amazon Fire TV Stick is a 1080p model with support for HDR and Dolby Atmos technology, an Alexa voice remote, and 50-percent faster performance than the previous-gen model.

In addition to new hardware Amazon is also revamping the Fire TV user interface, which hasn't fared well in CNET's reviews especially against Roku.

The higher-priced Fire TV Stick will feature better performance than the Lite version and past models, as well as built-in volume and mute controls for a connected TV. You can now jump into your favorite streaming service directly, or scroll over supported apps to quickly peek at what's inside and begin playback.

But there are several ways you can support the site directly even if you're using an ad blocker and hate online shopping.

Improved voice controls allow you to navigate purely by voice commands, and the software offers six user profiles for different members of the same household. Changing user profiles is simple by saying, "Alexa, switch to my profile".

Alexa is getting smarter every day, and the redesigned Fire TV experience features a dedicated Alexa Explore destination, which displays popular Alexa features and helps you discover new recipes, view stocks, and more. Actual 4K resolution is reserved for the $50 (£50) Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, which will remain on sale unchanged.

The next-generation FireTV devices also come with improved voice controls.

On the software side of things, Amazon has announced that the Fire TV user interface will get an update, or rather a redesign, later this year with "new content-discovery features, enhanced Alexa voice integration, and user profiles for personalised recommendations". Connect a compatible Logitech webcam to stay in touch with friends and family on the biggest screen in your home.
