Apple won’t collect fees on paid Facebook events until 2021

The new Coalition for App Fairness - of which Epic, Match Group, Spotify, and Basecamp are all members - has also been fighting for a change to these practices.

Several of the founding members are companies that have recently battled Apple over its App Store policies.

The social network had asked Apple to skip its usual 30% cut of transactions in mobile apps prior to enable the Facebook Live streaming to be used to create, promote and host paid events from concerts and theatrical performances to yoga classes and cooking lessons. As is the case with Apple's unfair policies on iOS, this system gives the company a 30 percent cut of any purchases inside of mobile apps on Android.

Every developer should always have access to app stores as long as its app meets fair, objective and nondiscriminatory standards for security, privacy, quality, content, and digital safety.

Apple's war with developers just escalated, with the powers behind Spotify, "Fortnite", and Tinder banding together to take on the iPhone maker.

Epic Games has been embroiled in a legal dispute with Apple over the past month after it scrapped Apple's payment system inside the wildly popular "Fortnite" and subsequently got booted off the App Store.

Mike Sax, founder of The App Association, a group sponsored by Apple, said in statement that the new coalition's "big brands do not speak for the thousands of app makers that are the foundation of the app economy". Their issue with Apple is mostly over its app policies and how the fees are levied.

Apple's App Store has the same requirement as Google Play for in-app purchases and billing. For instance, Apple had blocked Basecamp from releasing an update to its subscription-based email app, Hey, and threatened to remove the app from its store entirely if it continued to offer users a way to pay for subscriptions outside of the app.

For perspective, Apple has similar rules in place for its App Store, and it has been much more aggressive about enforcing them from the start.

The podcast curation service was also available on CarPlay, and it's believed that once the integration into Apple Music is ready, iPhone owners who connect their devices to the head units when driving could thus be provided with upgraded capabilities.

Each of these developers has tangled with Apple individually over its in-app payment policy.

Nevertheless, Apple's rules are more stringent than Google's.

The spokesperson added that the 30% commission doesn't apply to ticketing for real-world events, only those that are held within App Store apps in a virtual fashion.

But the app tax isn't the only issue the Coalition for App Fairness is pushing to change.
