Brazil gives equal pay to men's and women's national players

The FA disclosed on Thursday that gender parity in terms of both match fees and match bonuses for its national teams had been in place since January - a day after its Brazilian counterpart announced it had achieved the same goal in March.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on Wednesday that its men's and women's national soccer teams will receive equal pay and prize money.

After this move the country's top women footballers such as Marta, Formiga and Leticia Santos will earn the same as Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino while representing the nation.

Pay disparity between men's and women's professional soccer players has been in the spotlight since the United States women's team sued the governing body US Soccer a year ago alleging gender discrimination in earnings and working conditions.

In March 2019, the USA women's team, the current world champions, sued their federation alleging discrimination over pay and conditions.

USWNT players are seeking to appeal a ruling against them in May by a federal judge who decided that the case they brought was "insufficient to create a genuine issue of material fact for trial".

Brazil women's team coach Pia Sundhage termed the announcement as "historic".

Last year, they were forced to take a commercial flight to the Nice for the start of the World Cup, while England's Under-21s men's side used a private jet to get to the Euros Italy in the same summer.

U.S. Soccer refused to pay women equally. Brazil's men's team has won the World Cup a record five times and has the most overall wins in the event.

They have also won their continental championship, the Copa America, nine times, most recently on home soil in 2019. By contrast, the best World Cup result for the US men's team was a third-place finish in 1930, and it suffered a major embarrassment by failing to qualify for the 2018 tournament.

The CBF said later in a statement that equal pay was "part of the journey of transformation" towards equality in football, the most popular sport in the country, which has 36 professional clubs.

The United States women's national team has been involved in what's been described broadly as an equal pay dispute for years, supported by their peers on the USMNT.

The Football Association has confirmed that it moved to give the Lionesses equal pay to their male counterparts at the start of the year, ensuring that worldwide players are rewarded with the same salary regardless of gender.
