Buttler to miss the final T20I against Australia

The teams will now lock horns with each other on the final match of the T20I series on September 8 at Southampton.

The one-day series marks the end of England men's home global season, with all 18 scheduled fixtures across three formats - Tests, one-dayers and T20s - set to be completed, behind closed doors, despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the first T20 worldwide against Australia, Buttler had opened the innings with Jonny Bairstow.

For the second T20 worldwide, the wicketkeeper-batsman smashed not out 77 runs off 54 balls as the hosts chased the target of 158.

It is understood that the 29-year-old approached captain Eoin Morgan and head coach Chris Silverwood after his match-winning 77 not out gave the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead at the Ageas Bowl on Sunday and they granted his release. The ongoing series between England and Australia is being played behind closed doors as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus. He is delighted to get the opportunity to bat at the opening position. Since his promotion as an opener, Buttler has scored four fifty-plus scores at a strike-rate of 157.73.

"Buttler is an incredible player, he can hit all around the ground, he is diffficult to bowl to, he finishes the games off, he is often there at the end taking England over the line, hats off to him, he is an incredible player". I've played a lot of my career - T20 and one-day cricket - batting in the middle, so I'm very comfortable doing that as well. He said that there is healthy competition in the team for the place which will serve England to go forward. "We take a lot of pride in being the number one team in the world in this format, it is a lot of fun, so it would be good if we can hold on to our number one spot", Agar said.
