Coronavirus: Portugal back on quarantine list for England

Portugal has been added to England's travel quarantine list, with travellers returning from 4am on Saturday needing to self-isolate for two weeks. This means that passengers arriving in England from Madeira and the Azores will not need to self-isolate, but those arriving from Portugal and its other islands will need to self-isolate as it will be removed from the travel corridor exemption list.

Hungary, French Polynesia and Reunion have also been removed from England's safe travel list, but Sweden has been added to it.

Using the targeted islands policy announced this week, the government has been able to differentiate between Madeira and the Azores (which do not show a significant increase in cases), and the rest of Portugal.

Many expected the government to remove Portugal from the "safe" list last week after Wales and Scotland axed the mainland from theirs on September 4 and September 5 respectively.

However, those arriving in England from Sweden will not need to be isolated anymore.

The latest update is likely to spark a second rush back to the United Kingdom as they race against the Saturday 4am deadline.

"If you arrive In England from Sweden, you will NOT need to self-isolate for 14 days".

"This week, Sweden has been added to the Travel Corridors list".

He also stressed that travellers must fill out the Passenger Locator Form on arrival to the United Kingdom, a day after the prime minister said enforcement of this part of the quarantine rules would be stepped up.

Portugal, which has reported 62,126 cases so far, initially won praise for its response to the pandemic but cases have crept back up, with the health authority reporting on Thursday 585 new infections, mainly in Greater Lisbon and the northern region.

But Paul Charles, chief executive of travel consultancy The PC Agency, said the weekly review system was not helping to revive confidence in travel.

A seven-day rate of 20 is the threshold above which the UK Government considers triggering quarantine conditions.

"This is vital in protecting public health & ensuring those who need to are complying with self-isolation rules".

"It is a criminal offence not to complete the form and spot checks will be taking place".
