F1 Chinese Grand Prix set for new race deal until 2025

The coronavirus pandemic compelled F1 to rip up its original 22-race calendar this 12 months, and so significantly it has confirmed 13 rescheduled races on the European continent (see sidebar over).

Formula One has also announced that, in its latest round of coronavirus testing on drivers and team personnel, all 1,461 tests came back negative.

But F1 officials have accepted that it will be impossible to hold the races.

The activity is nevertheless in conversations about holding races in Asia in November, which includes a rescheduled date for the Vietnam Grand Prix that was originally scheduled for April.

In the same calendar update, F1 revealed that it will not be possible to race in Canada, USA, Mexico and Brazil this season "due to the fluid nature of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, local restrictions and the importance of keeping communities and our colleagues safe".

Organisers of the Russian Grand Prix, to be held at the Sochi Autodrom, are due to allow spectators and the Nurburgring is hoping to open its doors to some fans.

It means alongside races at Monza and Mugello, Italy will stage three events this year, making it only the second time in F1 history - after the United States in 1982 at Long Beach, Detroit and Las Vegas - that a country has held three races in a calendar year.

"In fact, we are the only ones in the world to have three circuits approved to host races of the maximum formula of motorsport".

It is also notorious as the track on which Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger were killed on consecutive days in 1994.

F1 still does not have a full calendar, but says it remains hopeful of being able to have "between 15 and 18 races this year and end in the Gulf in mid-December".

Germany's famous Nurburgring will host a Grand Prix on October 9-11, with the Portimao circuit in the Algarve making its F1 debut on October 23-25 before a return to Imola for Italy's third race of the season on October 31-November 1. All three races have been scheduled between October and November, which is when the tracks in the America's were expected to be scheduled.
