Fortnite Creator Epic Games Says Players Can Use Apple Sign-In System

Epic had said on Wednesday that gamers would not be able to log into the game using their Apple sign-in credentials from Friday. Epic Games appeared to place the blame on Apple, stating that "Apple will no longer allow users to sign into Epic Games accounts using "Sign In with Apple". Apple also said that free standalone apps connected to a paid service outside the app - such as email or cloud storage services - do not need to use its payment system "provided there is no purchasing inside the app, or calls to action for purchase outside of the app".

Apple had planned to cut those users off as soon as today, but now Epic reports that Apple has changed its mind. That means Fortnite players could be left without knowing their own password to login on other devices.

Players who now use their Apple ID to sign in to Epic Games will have to update the email on their account to avoid getting locked out, as well as setting up a password if they haven't already done so.

Introducing an alternative payment system to the one provided by Apple to allow iOS and iPadOS developers is against the terms of service for the App Store and Fortnite was swiftly removed. This saga was also timed alongside Epic Games' broader complaints about in-app purchases on the games store. The company also ensures it doesn't send personal information to apps. Amazon doesn't offer iOS users the ability to buy Kindle ebooks from its iPad and iPhone apps for the same reason.

Although Epic portrays itself as a modern corporate Robin Hood, in reality it is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that simply wants to pay nothing for the tremendous value it derives from the App Store. The worst part is that gamers will not be able to play Fortnite on iOS even if they have it already installed.

Google and Nvidia, makers of the Stadia and GeForce Now cloud gaming platforms, both declined to comment to media outlets.
