That figure has now shot up for 12 days in a row.

In the past 24 hours coronavirus fatalities in hospitals and nursing homes have increased by 17 - taking the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 30,910.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said the government will introduce further measures to help curb the quickening spread of coronavirus while preserving social life and keeping economic activities operating. The number of patients in intensive care units stands at 615, a level unseen since the end of June.

"We have to continue to be careful, to be realistic", said the president, warning against the dangers of any panic reaction.

"In these (risk) regions we could look into further restrictions of big gatherings of crowds", Professor Jean-François Delfraissy, who heads the scientific council that advises the government on the epidemic, told RTL radio.

He said these would include fast-tracked COVID testing for priority cases, and giving local authorities the power to make some businesses reduce opening hours.

He said: "The virus is with us for several more months and we must manage to live with it without letting ourselves get drawn once again into a narrative of nationwide lockdown".

Castex has also given local administrators in Marseille and Bordeaux, as well as the Caribbean territory of Guadeloupe until Monday to come up with new measures to stall the spread of the virus locally.

Prime Minister Jean Castex is himself in a seven-day period of self-isolation, having spent part of the weekend with the boss of the Tour de France who tested positive for COVID-19.

"The only way we will succeed in stopping this epidemic is if all of us are vigilant and stick together".
