House Democrats Investigating Postmaster General Over Campaign Finance Allegations

First reported by the Washington Post, Sunday's story included claims from former employees of DeJoy's logistics company, New Breed, most notably its onetime human resources director, David Young, who said that DeJoy - a major donor to the Republican Party and President Trump - had reimbursed his employees for political donations by using payroll bonuses.

He added that "DeJoy was never notified by the New Breed employees referenced by the Washington Post of any pressure they might have felt to make a political contribution, and he regrets if any employee felt uncomfortable for any reason".

Rep. Carolyn Maloney, of NY, chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, told The Post the committee would look into whether he lied under oath when he previously testified before the committee. His tenure has been marked by controversy, including accusations of potential conflicts of interest and for implementing cost-cutting measures - some of which were suspended ahead of the 2020 election - which critics anxious could cause mail delays in an election that will likely rely heavily on mail-in ballots due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Democratic Attorneys General Association also raised the alarm about what co-chairs Maura Healey and Ellen Rosenblum, of MA and OR, respectively, called "an extensive scheme to violate federal and state campaign finance laws" and "a pattern of potentially criminal conduct". "The answer is no". He ran afoul of House Democrats after ordering an "operational pivot" within the Postal Service that caused some delays - prompting additional criticism by Democrats who accused him of trying to hurt voting by mail. The reports detailed how multiple employees at High Point-based New Breed would donate to the same candidate on the same day, sometimes writing checks for an identical amount of money. "Mr. DeJoy believes that all campaign fundraising laws and regulations should be complied with in all respects".

President Trump, when asked whether he was open to an investigation into DeJoy during a news conference on Monday said, "Sure, sure, let the investigations go".

"That's an outrageous claim, sir, and I resent it", he said when asked by Rep. Jim Cooper, a Democrat from Tennessee.

Trump told reporters that if DeJoy did something wrong he should be investigated and lose his job. "If something can be proven that he did something, always".

DeJoy took the helm of the United States Postal Service in June and has been under the microscope for cost-cutting measures that have disrupted mail service.

Speaking on behalf of the Democratic Association of Attorneys General (DAGA), co-chairs AG Maura Healey of MA and AG Ellen Rosenblum of OR said that with the election fast-approaching - and DeJoy's role as Postmaster General so pivotal in terms of securing the integrity of the vote - the best option would be for DeJoy to step down while a thorough probe is conducted.

'It is clear that a subpoena has become necessary to further the Committee´s investigation and help inform potential legislative actions, ' Maloney (D - New York), said last week.

The subpoena sets a deadline for noon September 16 for the United States Postal Service (USPS) to deliver the documents to Congress.
